Abbott Animal Health launches SevoFlo(r) 100 mL

Anesthesia is an integral part of pet care from surgical procedures to dental cleanings, but larger bottles may provide too much product for smaller veterinary clinics or clinics that do not regularly perform procedures requiring inhaled anesthetic. In order to better meet these veterinarians’ needs, Abbott Animal Health is introducing SevoFlo® (sevoflurane) in a 100 mL bottle. The new offering is the only 100 mL bottle of sevoflurane on the market, according to the company. Similar to the larger 250 mL offering, it is sold in a PEN plastic bottle (safeguarding against possible breakage and loss of product) and contains 300 ppm water (helping protect equipment from damaging Lewis acids). Abbott will offer expert advice and training to veterinary staff on how to administer and use SevoFlo and related equipment. With SevoFlo, induction is smooth and the depth of the anesthesia can be altered quickly and easily, allowing for veterinarians to keep animals at the appropriate anesthesia “plane,” ensuring patients make a quick and comfortable recovery.

Duramune Lyme Vaccine approved for use in dogs

Duramune® Lyme™ from Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BIVI) recently has been approved for veterinary use by the USDA. It’s available in a stand-alone vaccine as DURAMUNE LYME and in combination with proven parvo and subunit lepto protection.

According to Arne Zislin, VMD, technical manager veterinarian with BIVI, DURAMUNE LYME is a two-strain, whole-cell, multi-Osp Borrelia Burgdorferi bacterin that provides a cascade of disease protection from the moment the tick bites the dog. “DURAMUNE LYME elicits a broad spectrum antibody response against a wide variety of outer surface proteins (Osp), including A, B, C and more, in vaccinated dogs,” Zislin says. “It has been proven in field studies with real-world dogs to be safe and highly efficacious against a full range of Borrelia Burgdorferi spirochetes in the tick and the host.”

Abbott introduces new line of catheters

Catheterization plays an integral role in patient care, as it is used to obtain venous access, administer IV fluids and inject drugs. Yet, the catheters routinely being used in veterinary medicine were designed for the human market. In fact, a new study has shown that one in six catheters may go to waste. To address the specific needs of the veterinary community, Abbott Animal Health worked closely with veterinarians and veterinary technicians to develop its new, advanced line of veterinary-labeled peripheral catheters. These new catheters may help veterinarians and veterinary technicians to improve their confidence and accuracy when placing catheters. Features of the new catheters include:

• A sharper needle that produces a straighter, cleaner cut, which reduces skin trauma and pain
• Bevel-up orientation that can be determined without looking
• Clear catheter hub to confirm the flashback
• Eco-friendly packaging to reduce waste
