Nobivac canine flu vaccine granted license by USDA Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health announced that the Nobivac® Canine Flu H3N8, the first vaccine against canine influenza virus (CIV), has been granted a full license by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), according to the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service through its Center for Veterinary Biologics. Licensure follows evaluation of use of the vaccine by veterinarians since May 27, 2009, when a conditional license was awarded. Nearly 1 million doses of the vaccine have been sold to veterinary clinics and shelters throughout the U.S. during the past year, Intervet/Schering said. The USDA approval confirms the safety and effectiveness of Nobivac Canine Flu H3N8, which has been shown to significantly decrease the signs, severity and spread of CIV infection. The vaccine has also been shown to reduce the incidence and severity of lung lesions. |

Precautionary recall of Iams ProActive Health canned cat food Proctor & Gamble, parent company of the Iams brand, has issued a recall of canned cat food. The voluntary recall is a “precautionary measure” as the “product may contain insufficient levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1), which is essential for cats. Cats that were fed these canned products as their only food are at greater risk for developing signs of thiamine deficiency.” The recall applies only to canned cat foods in North America (Iams ProActive Health canned Cat and Kitten Food, all varieties), 3-ounce and 5.5-ounce cans, dated 09/2001 to 06/2012 (on the bottom of the can). |

ASCPA offers hot weather tips for pet owners ASCPA recently provided pet owners some tips for summer to avoid overheating. They are as follows: visit the vet for a checkup; keep pets hydrated with plenty of fresh, clean water; know the warning signs of overheating such as excessive panting and increased heart and respiratory rate; never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle; do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool; keep all unscreened windows or doors in your home closed and make sure adjustable screens are tightly secured; give your dog a lightweight summer haircut; when the temperature is very high, don’t let your dog linger on hot asphalt; when walking your dog, steer clear of areas that you suspect have been sprayed with insecticides or other chemicals; keep snacks and beverages enjoyed by people away from pets, such as alcoholic beverages, raisins and grapes; leave pets at home when you head out to Fourth of July celebrations, and never use fireworks around pets. |

AP poll shows money a major consideration in pet care A recent Associated Press-Petside poll discovered that money is a consideration for the majority of people when dealing with the cost of health care for animals. The poll, conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media, found that while 62 percent of pet owners would likely get vet care if the bill was $500 or less, the percentage drops below half when the cost hits $1,000. The number drops to 35 percent if the cost is $2,000 and to 22 percent if it reaches $5,000. Only at the $500 level are dog owners (74 percent) more likely than cat owners (46 percent) to say they would likely seek treatment. In the higher price ranges, the two are about equally likely to seek vet care. |

Trek promotes dog DNA for cancer research Luke Robinson and his two Great Pyrenees – Hudson and Murphy – are walking across America to raise awareness about cancer in dogs. The 2,000-mile walk is helping a new $5.3 million canine cancer project recently launched by the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and the Van Andel Research Institute (VARI). The walk started in Robinson’s hometown of Austin, Texas and will complete in Boston on June 19, when the TGen-VARI-led Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium (CHCC) will join Robinson in celebrating by gathering DNA samples from as many as 2,000 dogs nationwide. Robinson started out the trek to raise awareness after one of his other dogs, Malcolm, died of bone cancer. Robinson’s progress can be tracked at http://www.2dogs2000miles.org/Home_Page.html. |

Texas A&M vet researchers clone foal Researchers at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences have achieved the successful delivery of a foal using oocytes from a live mare, the first such clone in the world. The process began with a biopsy of skin cells from the horse to be cloned. Through the cloning process using oocytes recovered from a live mare, viable embryos were developed and sent to Hartman Equine Reproduction Center, an embryo transfer facility in North Texas which works closely with Texas A&M University Equine Reproduction Expert, Dr. Katrin Hinrichs, and her lab, for transfer into surrogate mares. Minnie, the mare carrying Mouse, stayed in North Texas for approximately 200 days, then was sent to her new home in Florida. |

Tips for cats visiting vet office A recent article highlighted ways cat owners could make vet visits for cats less stressful. The tips included: leave your cat’s carrier out so that it becomes a den just like a dog’s crate; spray a synthetic pheromone, like “FELIWAY” in the carrier approximately a half hour before you travel to make your cat more at ease; remain calm before you need to place your cat in the carrier; take your cat on car rides in the carrier without going to the vet; and don’t feed your cat before you travel in the car except for the treats used to entice the cat into the car. |

Five skunks and one horse have been infected with the disease in Arapahoe and Adams counties from Jan. 1 to June 1, with most cases occurring in April and May. During that period, 41 skunks were infected with the disease in Colorado. There were about 40 skunks infected with rabies for all of last year, an expert said. |

TSCRA disappointed resolution failed to pass preventing EPA regulation of greenhouse gases The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) says it is disappointed after the U.S. Senate failed to pass a resolution that would have prevented the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from regulating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases (GHG). Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) filed a disapproval resolution after the EPA released an endangerment finding giving themselves the authority to regulate GHGs. If the EPA regulates GHGs under the Clean Air Act (CAA), the cost would be overwhelming as millions of entities, the TSCRA says, including ranches, which would be subject to “burdensome CAA regulations.” If ranchers don’t comply with the new regulations, they could be subject to fines. “If the federal government wants to regulate greenhouse gases, that debate should happen in Congress, where agriculture has representation, not through a backdoor approach,” said Dave Scott, rancher and TSCRA president. “The EPA’s decision to regulate greenhouse gases on their own authority will drastically increase the cost of producing safe and affordable food, putting many ranchers out of business.” |
